Point of View Lesson Plan
Concept: Students will compare and contrast the two points of view expressed in witness statements from April 19, 1775.
Method of Instruction: Discussion/Lecture
Time Allotment: 60 minutes
Material: Pencils, paper, notebooks, handouts
Prerequisite skills: Students will use prior discussion, video presentations, and notes.
Goals: Students will create an essay that compare and contrast the points of view of the British Regulars and Lexington Militia.
Standards:
History and Social Science:
5.17 A: Describe the major battles of the Revolution and explain the factors leading to American victory and British defeat. (Lexington & Concord.)
English/Language Arts:
2.3: Gather relevant information for a research project or composition through interviews.
2.4: Integrate relevant information gathered from group discussions and interviews for reports.
19.22: Write and justify a personal interpretation of literary, informational, or expository reading that includes a topic statement, supporting details from the literature, and a conclusion.
Making Freedom Historical Benchmarks:
· Analysis of primary and secondary sources
· An understanding of historical debate and controversy
· Formulation of questions through inquiry and determining their importance
Procedure:
· Begin with a review of primary and secondary sources.
· Students will read eyewitness accounts from both the British Regular and Lexington Militia point of views.
· Each student will read a part, even if parts are read more than once.
· Students will discuss each selection and write one sentence review of important part of each statement.
· Students will help create a class Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the viewpoints expressed in the witness statements.
· Students will create a point of view essay based on the Venn diagram.
Assessment:
Informal: Students will share rough drafts with teacher correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammer.
Formal: Students will pass in a three to five page essay that will be graded based on enclosed rubric.
